What We Do

You may be wondering what it means to "do" RDI®. As you become a more adept guide to your child with autism you will find that it becomes easy to incorporate the many tools of guided participation to spontaneous activities and interactions throughout the day. We call this Lifestyle RDI® because employing the strategies that you will learn becomes part of how you parent your child.

You will also learn how to challenge and support your child so that he will feel competent and make discoveries without feeling overwhelmed or threatened. We call these Framed Activities because you will put careful thought into engineering a sequence of events that will help your child to discover something new about himself or the environment.

Lifestyle RDI® happens anywhere and anytime you and your child are together: at the grocery store, in the park, at home, in the pool, getting ready for the day, at the dinner table, in the car ... you get the idea. There are endless opportunities for a conscientious guide to help a child learn dynamic processing skills.

Framed Activities happen in a controlled environment, usually in your home to begin with. You will learn to become aware of the environment in which you are asking your child to process new information. You will also learn how to challenge and support your child so that he can feel competent and make discoveries without the risk of failure. Video clips of these framed activities will be an important part of how you communicate with, and receive feedback from, your consultant.
